Historic Background of Practice
The Edmeston, New York law practice at 7 West Street is a
continuation of several prestigious law firms which have
continuously operated in the community for over 50 years. The
Law Offices of Timothy R. Johnson succeeded a practice which was
operated by his father, Richard E. Johnson, Esq., from 1966
until his death in 1985. Prior to that, Richard E. Johnson, Esq.
and Frederick W. Loomis, Esq. were partners in practice from
1960 to 1966 when Frederick W. Loomis became a full-time Judge
for Otsego County in County Court, Family Court, and Surrogate’s
Court. Family Court cases were handled in the office at 7 West
Street in Edmeston for a time in the 1960’s while Judge Loomis
served as a part-time Family Court Judge.
The Morris, New York law practice at 144 Main Street is also a
continuation of several long-standing law practices in the same
building. Chester Backus, Esq. conducted his law practice on the
premises for over 30 years. He was an active political leader in
the area and he served as a New York State Assemblyman. Mr.
Backus retired and sold his practice to Frederick W. Loomis and
Richard E. Johnson in the early 1960’s. Richard E. Johnson took
over the practice 1n 1966 when Judge Loomis became the first
full-time Otsego County Judge. Timothy R. Johnson took over the
practice in 1986 and continues to practice there today.
